Subject Matter

See Mark 6:24-5

At left, Herod, seated, clutches his garment as he make a gesture of assent with his right hand. At right is his wife Herodiade, who clasps her palms together as she asks her husband for the head of John the Baptist (Usually it is her daughter Salomé who is pictured making this request.) On the right side of the capital, two guards pull John the Baptist from the dungeon in which he is imprisoned.
