Subject Matter

Miracles of Saint Benedict: On left side of capital, a demon breaks the basket used to lower bread into the cave of the hermit-monk. (Scene not visible)In the center, Benedict and a devil contend over the soul of a woman. The devil (left) has a beard,wings, and a naked torso. He extends his hand to the woman (center) whileBenedict (right) holds a book , and may be preaching-his mouth is open and his right hand is in a rhetorical gesture.
