Preliminary Notes

There is controversy among scholars as to who built the first building
An earthquake in August, 1089 damaged the building seriously
July 15, 1100, the church was dedicated (Chronicle of Florence of Worcester) It is unclear how much of the building was finished at that time
Damaged by fire ca 1101, and then again in 1122. (Saxon Chronicle)
One of the western towers feel sometime between 1164 and 1179
Rededicated in 1242
Structure damaged by fire on the feast of the Epiphany in 1300
Many later changes and additions to the building
Henry VIII created an episcopal see and made this building its Cathedral
Building contains the tombs of King Edward II and Robert of Normandy, brother of kings William Rufus and Henry I
