South transept started by Archbishop Simeon in 1082

Presbytery finished by Bishop Northwold in 1252 (Matther Paris)

In 1322, the Norman central tower fell and destroyed the east end.(only
2 bays of presbytery survived)

Lower crossing rebuilt 1322-28 and wooden lantern finished 1340

Choir finished ca ca 1340

Lady chapel founded 1321, probably consecrated in 1351

Dimensions Interior Length 517 feet, Nave :length: 230 feet, width<
78 feet. Width of octagon 74 feet, Height of vault 72 feet, height of Western
tower, 215 feet. Area 46,000 sq. feet.(Sweeting, p. 137)
