The Treasure of Saint Denis
Brooch for a Cope
Adapted from Félibien, Plate III, Item
Brooch for a cope. It is made of gilded silver ornamented
with some precious stones. On it can be seen Saint Denis, with two other
figures, also of gilded silver.
Félibien, pages 541. Translated by Jane Vadnal.
- In Le Trésor de St. Denis, Danielle Gaborit-Chopin
says that Félibien confused two brooches. She says that though he
described the brooch of St. Denis, in Plate III, he showed another brooch,
which showed St. Louis.
- Both brooches were taken to the Louvre on December 5, 1793: The brooch
which pictured St. Louis was stolen in 1830, the one showing St. Denis
was sold in 1798.
